Safemeating Policy – 2023

The care and protection of meat, young meat and 28 day aged meat involved in MeatfestTM activities is the responsibility of everyone who participates in attending.  The CampChefTM

 is the designated Safemeating Co-ordinator.

Our aims:

  • Promoting a safer environment and culture for our meat.
  • Supporting all those with any responsibility related to meat and meat exposure.
  • Ensuring that all meat is cooked in an environment where it can achieve its full potential (except when served “blue” or marinated in the right way).
  • Responding promptly to every safemeating concern or allegation.
  • Ensuring all those involved in over-cooking meat are reported to the CampChefTM who can take disciplinary action and introduce measures to prevent further incidents.
  • Caring pasture-ally for our meat.
  • Responding to those that may pose a present risk to our meat stores.

If you are concerned that any meat is at risk of harm, or is being mis-cooked, or presents a risk to other meat, please seek advice from our Safemeating Co-Ordinator – CampChefTM.

Basic Safemeating principles

Raw meat should be kept in a safe place while onsite in case we attract bears or llamas. It’s recommended that you bring a fridge, or suitable coolbox.

  1. No small fridges please. Only large ones that hold lots of meat will do. Meat needs to be kept with lots of other meat for it to feel safe.
  2. Any meat left unattended around a BBQ will be carefully cooked and safely devoured by the CampChefTM and other designated Safemeating specialists.
  3. You are responsible for bringing your own meat and cooking your own meat and then eating your own meat. Unless it’s left unattended in which case see point 2.
  4. It’s your responsibility to make sure that the meat was locally sourced and killed in a worthy manner. You may not bring live meat to meatfest.
  5. Roadkill on route to MeatfestTM is acceptable. As such we recommend driving in convoy. We suggest you apply the sniff test to ascertain freshness.
  6. Any vegetables left unattended will be planted or fed to next year’s meat stock.
  7. TCM – trusted cooking method is recommended. You will need your own this year.

Trusted Cooking Methods

  • Trusted cooking methods listed below in order of preference:
  • Raised BBQ.
  • Wood pit.
  • Tripod over a naked flame
  • Camping stove.
  • Flamethrower.
  • Burning neighbours tent.
  • Cooking on car engine immediately after arrival. (Tinfoil is not provided)

We apologise if you were expecting this to be about children, but we do not cook children at MeatfestTM unless they have been really naughty.
